Indie Game Spotlight

Posted April 2025

Introduction

In my spare time I'm always checking out the latest game trailers and upcoming releases. Over the past year, 5 indie games have really caught my attention. Find out more below!

Developer: Regular Studio
Publisher: Top Hat Studios
Release Date: 2025 (Date TBC)

MOTORSLICE is an upcoming action parkour title inspired by Mirror’s Edge and Prince of Persia. The player controls ‘P’ as she navigates through a massive megastructure, fighting bosses and scaling buildings, all while exuding style.

The main thing that caught my eye about MOTORSLICE was the very crisp art direction and the sheer novelty of the enemies the player will encounter, such as trucks, helicopters, and cranes. The Mirror’s Edge inspiration is evident from the gameplay shown so far, but the game is also heavily reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus, a favourite game of mine and many others. P can use her signature chainsaw to scale both buildings and bosses, where the combat and platforming merge seamlessly.

Another one of my favourite games is Nier Automata, where the main character has combat animations that are brutal but also elegant and feminine. I find that stylised animations such as the ones in Automata, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry give so much personality to the characters. MOTORSLICE appears to follow that same philosophy, as I first noticed when watching P deflecting an enemy buzzsaw and then striking a stylish pose. There also appears to be a nice weightiness to the movement when running and platforming, which is the sort of attention to detail I always appreciate.

Speaking of attention to detail, the game features a lot of nice little interactive elements, such as:

  • The camera being an actual object in the game world

  • P touching and interacting with surfaces as she navigates the environment

  • P reacting to the camera focusing on her, turning her head and even striking a pose sometimes

  • P shielding her eyes from bright lights

  • P getting covered in dirt from the environment and oil from the enemies she defeats

We Kill Monsters Logo.jpg

Developer: Glass Revolver
Publisher: Annapurna Interactive
Release Date: TBC

We Kill Monsters has you controlling a homunculi created to explore the depths of the massive pit below the city of Edinu. The game can be played solo or in coop, and appears to revolve around exploring the environment, fighting monsters, and survival elements.

This one isn’t as far along as MOTORSLICE, but the game caught my eye due to its gorgeous environments and seemingly minimalist style. For me, the games visuals heavily evoke great titles such as the Witcher 3, Shadow of the Colossus, and the Oddworld series (the natural environments specifically), albeit with its own style and art direction. It looks just like the sort of world I would want to get lost in.

Very little of the game has been shown at this point but it seems to feature a mix ranged and melee combat. The flora and fauna of the world look very unique and I can’t wait to see a longer gameplay showcase at some point in the future.

If you’re interested in more information, YouTuber ‘nocaps’ did a great breakdown video going into more detail on the mechanics shown thus far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyAK8eFKVlI&t=152s

I love folklore and mythology, so always enjoy seeing new and interesting creature designs. Before I move on, I want to list the cool creatures that have been shown so far:

  • Lesser Angel (some sort of tentacled nightmare)

  • Void Fish (floating ghost tadpoles)

  • Observer (animated statue head, possibly attached to a larger body)

  • Moonlight Child (Studio Ghibli style glowing cherubs)

  • Leshy style creature (bipedal)

  • Skull faced jellyfish style creature (possibly related to angels)

VA Proxy Logo

Developer: Pyrolith
Publisher: Pyrolith
Release Date: TBC (demo available on Steam)

If you’ve heard of this game it is most likely due to the numerous clips of the main character (an ‘S Unit’) parrying a nuke. That is exactly the sort of craziness you can expect from V.A Proxy, a fast paced action game which reminds me heavily of Nier Automata’s freeform movement, mixed with a Sekiro style parry system.

V.A Proxy can actually be played now via the steam demo. I have very limited time to game these days so have yet to check it out myself, but it looks like a ton of fun.

One key thing that drew me to this game is the art style. More and more, I find myself disinterested in games with hyper realistic visuals, as they tend to not look noticeably better than games from multiple generations ago. I can of course appreciate the stunning visuals of Cyberpunk 2077 or Hellbade 2, but I find it much more interesting to see games which try to distinguish themselves with a unique visual style. V.A Proxy does exactly that, with an almost cell shaded look and drab colours to create a unique atmosphere.

The combat itself looks flashy and engaging, seeing the player dash through ranged attacks and deliver fast strikes to opponents ranging from other S Units to giant mechanised dragons!

Before I move on, here are all the fun things I’ve seen that you can do in this game:

  • Ride on an enemy projectile (or your own)

  • Fight colossal enemies

  • Fishing with a twist

  • Grapple hook across the landscape

  • Platform to very high up and freefall all the way back down (an epic sense of scale)

  • Parry a nuke (of course this would be on the list)

  • Parry gravity to break your fall!

Prison of Husks Logo.jpg

Developer: Glass Head Dolls
Publisher: Glass Head Dolls
Release Date: TBC (
demo available)

Another game with a distinct visual style, Prison of Husks is an upcoming action game heavily inspired by Demon’s Souls and the original Dark Souls. Think dense, complex levels and slow, deliberate combat in a decaying world and you get the right idea.

Prison of Husks reminds me a lot of Ico as it has a similar art direction and deliberately tries to capture the style of early PlayStation 2 titles. It is an absolute visual treat and I look forward to seeing more.

Gameplay wise, you have a similar moveset to Dark Souls, but the ‘doll’ that you inhabit can add lives over their healthbar, so your healthbar only starts decreasing after your lives (called 'hit points' in this game) are depleted. There is definitely some Bloodborne DNA in there as well, with the quick sidesteps for dodging, which I have always preferred over rolling around during combat.

Not much more to say on this one as it is still in the early stages by the looks of things, but the essence of a great title is already present.

Banquet for Fools Logo_edited.jpg

Developer: Hannah and Joseph Games
Publisher: Hannah and Joseph Games
Release Date: Out now in Early Access

Last but certainly not least, we have Banquet for Fools, a game which instantly grabbed my attention due to its Claymation style visuals and interesting character designs. Unlike the other games on this list, the game is available to play now in Early Access, which includes the prologue and first area of the game.

Banquet for Fools is a CRPG with a mix of real-time and turn based combat. If you’re interested in learning more, I would highly recommend watching ‘Mortismal Gaming’s video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqFybJcPT6Y

This game looks absolutely gorgeous, and quite frankly like nothing else I've ever seen. I've only recently dipped my toe into the world of CRPGs with Baldur's Gate 3 last year (a must play title btw), so I'm not sure if this will be the game for me in the end, but nevertheless I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Wrap-up

With limited time to game these days, it feels like there is a never ending list of games to try out. I've barely started my Monster Hunter journey and already Clair Obscur has just released to critical acclaim! I hope to play all of the titles I've listed here at some point, especially MOTORSLICE, which looks like just the thing to play to relax after a long day at work.

I hope you've enjoyed this short article and as always thank you for reading! Until next time...
